SERRA DO URUBU (PERNAMBUCO STATE)

- AREA DESCRIPTION – The Serra do Urubu (Vulture’s Sierra), located at 9km from the city of Lagoa dos Gatos (Pernambuco State), is a high importance area for bird conservation in the world. It is part of the Pedra D’anta Private Reserve, a 360 hectares area managed by SAVE Brasil since 2004. Together with the 700 hectares from the Frei Caneca Private Reserve, these two reserves create over 1000 hectares of well-preserved Atlantic Forest. The Serra do Urubu has the status of “Important Bird Area” (IBA) in South America because out of the 281 species recorded there over 11 years of research, 14 species are globally endangered. Another attraction in this area is the magnificent Hummingbird Garden. The feeders in the garden attract over 20 species of hummingbirds, making it easy to take great photos of many species that would be otherwise hard to photograph. Finally, the latest addition to the reserve is a 12-meter talltower allowing for a panoramic view of the forest canopy. This is one of the most glamorous areas in our tours, with amazing photographic opportunities.
