CANUDOS (BAHIA STATE)

CANUDOS (BAHIA STATE)

- AREA DESCRIPTION – Canudos is located in the northern portion of the Bahia state, near the Pernambuco, Alagoas and Sergipe borders. The city was built inside the Raso da Catarina, an ecoregion located in the eastern-central portion of the state. The climate in this area is hot and the driest in the state, with large temperature changes between day and night. The average annual rainfall is 350 mm, and in some regions, it can be as low as 300 mm. Here, birdwatching activities will happen in the Estação Ecológica de Canudos. The EBC covers an area of 1500 hectares dedicated to the full preservation of one of the most extraordinary bird species in the world, the Lear's Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari). All the canyons used by this species for nest building are located in the EBC, including “Toca Velha”

- MAIN TARGET SPECIES– Here we will focus almost entirely on the Lear's Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari). This is the only place on the planet where this bird can be found. To do that, we will leave very early so we can arrive at the canyons before sunrise and watch the fabulous awakening of these birds. Nothing compares to the emotion of watching and listening to the frenetic vocalization of the macaws during sunrise! Other species that can be observed here are: Blue-crowned Parakeet (Thectocercus acuticaudatus), Red-legged Seriema (Cariama cristata), Great Xenops (Megaxenops parnaguai), Scarlet-throated Tanager (Compsothraupis loricata), among others.
