PICO DO JABRE/MATURÉIA (PARAÍBA STATE)
- AREA DESCRIPTION – The Pico do Jabreis located in the Maturéia town, in the countryside of Paraíba. It is the highest mountain in the state (1197 meters), and the third tallest in Northeast Brazil. The Pico do Jabre is a true biodiversity oasis in the dry landscape that surrounds it. The climate throughout the year is mild, and during the coldest months the thermal sensation can get close to zero degrees Celsius. The vegetation includes plant species typically found in wet forests and from the Caatinga creating a type of forest known as Mata Serrana, or “high hill woods”. Rock outcrops scattered around the Mata Serrana create beautiful landscapes for photo albums. Here, you will be lodged at the traditional Casarão do Jabre, a historical house located at the peak of the mountain. The Casarão do Jabre is a typical building from the colonial period and also works as a cultural center and historical museum.
- MAIN TARGET SPECIES SPECIES – At the Pico do Jabre we can find many bird species that occur both in the dry forests of the Caatinga and in the Brejos de Altitude (remains of wet forests found on mountain tops of Northeast Brazil). One beautiful example is the forest dependent Red-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanocephala), which was recently registered in the state. Other species such as the Tropical Parula (Setophaga pitiayumi), Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus), Guira Tanager (Hemithraups guira), Broad-tipped Hermit (Anopetia gounellei), Yellow-faced Siskin (Spinus yarrellii), Orange-headed Tanager (Thlypopsis sórdida), Ultramarine Grosbeak (Cyanoloxia brissonii), Chestnut-capped Blackbird (Chrysomus ruficapillus), Red-shouldered Spinetail (Synallaxis hellmayri), Red-billed Scythebill (Campylorhamphus trochilirostris), Silvery-cheeked Antshrike (Sakesphorus cristatus), Planalto Slaty-Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni), Caatinga Antshrike (Thamnophilus capistratus), Black Jacobin (Florisuga fusca).
