METROPOLITAN ZONE OF JOÃO PESSOA (PARAÍBA STATE)

METROPOLITAN ZONE OF JOÃO PESSOA (PARAÍBA STATE)

- AREA DESCRIPTION –– The Gargaú private reserve is located in the municipality of Santa Rita, 30 km from João Pessoa, the capital of the State of Paraíba. The reserve spans over more than 1.000 hectares with good roads that allow easy access to the entire area. Here we will visit one of the largest Atlantic Forest Fragments of the Pernambuco Endemism Center allowing us to find a significant number of bird species typical from this biome. The vegetation is composed by tall trees (15 to 20 meters tall) with a dense and connected canopy, creating favorable conditions for forest dependent species. These characteristics make the Gargaú private reserve and excellent place to observe forest bird species as well as threatened primate species such as the Red-handed Howler Monkey (Alouatta belzebul) and the Blonde Capuchin (Sapajus flavius).

- MAIN TARGET SPECIES – At Gargaú reserve our main target species will be forest dependent bird that live in the center of the forest (not near the borders) in areas with low light conditions. Therefore, to assure good photos, adequate photographic equipment will be necessary. Some of the species observed here are Pernambuco Foliage-gleaner (Automolus lammi), Black-cheeked Gnateater (Conopophaga melanops nigrifrons), White-bellied Tody-Tyrant (Hemitriccus griseipectus naumburgae), Amazonian Motmot (Momotus momota marcgraviana), Pernambuco Fire-eye (Pyriglena pernambucensis), Plain Xenops (Xenops minutus alagoanus), Northern Lesser Woodcreeper (Xiphorhynchus atlanticus), White-bearded Manakin (Manacus manacus), Blue-backed Manakin (Chiroxiphi apareola), Red-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra rubroapilla).
